SHINDIG - FEATURING DOBIE GREY, ZSA ZSA & MORE- ABC'-TV'S , 1960'S ROCK AND ROLL REVIEW

IN THE MID-1960'S, WHEN NBC AND ABC FIRST DID BATTLE FOR THE LOYALTY OF TEENAGE VIEWERS ( CBS THEN HAD MOM AND DAD SEWN UP WITH RURAL SITCOMS AND LAVISH VARIETY SHOWS -THAT WAS FINE FOR THEM), ABC PREMIERED SHINDIG. IT WASN'T A DANCE SHOW , ALA AMERICAN BANDSTAND, NOR WAS IT A VARIETY HOUR, LIKE NBC'S,YOUTH ORIENTED EFFORT, HULLABALOO. THIS WAS STAGED LIKE A ROCK AND ROLL REVUE AT A LOCAL THEATER OR NIGHTCLUB. ORIGINATING AT THE ABC STUDIOS IN HOLLYWOOD, IT FEATURED AN ECLECTIC ARRAY OF PERFORMERS AND MUSIC RANGING FROM THE BRITISH INVASION, TO MOTOWN AND EVEN THE PHILLY SOUND. GIVEN ABC'S STATUS THEN AS 1/2 A NETWORK , PRODUCTION VALUES WERE NOMINAL. IT LASTED TWO SEASONS, BUT LEFT A LEGACY OF GREAT PERFORMANCES.
