ERNIE KOVAC'S 1961 PRODUCTION OF THE MUSICAL OFFICE

A brilliant work of video artistry from tele-visionary Ernie Kovacs, the Trenton NJ native who made his reputation doing inspired comedy rooted in the use of television technology in the late 1940's and early 1950's on Philadelphia's KYW-TV(then WPTZ-TV). It is, given technology available when this was produced in 1961, a marvel of media!

SHINDIG - FEATURING DOBIE GREY, ZSA ZSA & MORE- ABC'-TV'S , 1960'S ROCK AND ROLL REVIEW

IN THE MID-1960'S, WHEN NBC AND ABC FIRST DID BATTLE FOR THE LOYALTY OF TEENAGE VIEWERS ( CBS THEN HAD MOM AND DAD SEWN UP WITH RURAL SITCOMS AND LAVISH VARIETY SHOWS -THAT WAS FINE FOR THEM), ABC PREMIERED SHINDIG. IT WASN'T A DANCE SHOW , ALA AMERICAN BANDSTAND, NOR WAS IT A VARIETY HOUR, LIKE NBC'S,YOUTH ORIENTED EFFORT, HULLABALOO. THIS WAS STAGED LIKE A ROCK AND ROLL REVUE AT A LOCAL THEATER OR NIGHTCLUB. ORIGINATING AT THE ABC STUDIOS IN HOLLYWOOD, IT FEATURED AN ECLECTIC ARRAY OF PERFORMERS AND MUSIC RANGING FROM THE BRITISH INVASION, TO MOTOWN AND EVEN THE PHILLY SOUND. GIVEN ABC'S STATUS THEN AS 1/2 A NETWORK , PRODUCTION VALUES WERE NOMINAL. IT LASTED TWO SEASONS, BUT LEFT A LEGACY OF GREAT PERFORMANCES.

INTRO TO HULLABALOO- NBC'S ATTEMPT AT A TEEN VARIETY PROGRAM-CIRCA 1966

NBC WANTED TO MOUNT A MUSIC/COMEDY/VARIETY PROGRAM WITH GUEST HOSTS AIMED AT AN ADOLESCENT AUDIENCE. BUT THE PROGRAM SENT A MIXED MESSAGE. JERRY LEWIS,AN ADULT PERFORMER WHO WAS BELOVED BY YOUNGSTERS, CO-HOSTED THIS EPISODE WITH HIS SON GARY LEWIS, WHO ALONG WITH HIS BAND, THE PLAYBOYS, HAD SEVERAL HIT SINGLES. NOTE THE SPONSORS WERE ALSO A MIXED METAPHOR: CARNATION EVAPORATED MILK ( FOR MOM AND DAD'S COFFEE) AND CLEARASIL ( FOR TEENS WHO WANTED TO BLOT AWAY BLEMISHES). PRODUCTION VALUES WERE ALSO SOMETIMES A BIT SCHIZOID: THE SHOW WOULD RANDOMLY ORIGINATE FROM THE NBC STUDIOS @ 30 ROCK, THE NBC BROOKLYN STAGES AND NBC BURBANK. SOMETIMES IT WAS BROADCAST IN LIVING COLOR , AND SOMETIMES IN LUSTEROUS BLACK AND WHITE.HULLABAL0O LASTED ONLY TWO SEASONS.

CLOSING CREDITS FOR HULLABALOO- NBC'S TEEN VARIETY SHOW-CIRCA 1966

NOTE THE SLIDES AND ANNOUNCER JOHNNY HOLLIDAY'S VOICEOVER DETAILING PROMOTIONAL CONSIDERATION PROVIDED FOR AIR TRAVEL, HOTEL AND CAR RENTAL. ALSO NOTE PRODUCER CREDIT FOR THE LEGENDARY GARY SMITH.

KINESCOPE HD - A New Home for Vintage Video Content

Welcome to KINESCOPE HD, my blog dedicated to celebrating, preserving and recognizing the best, the worst and the most interesting content television has to offer.

There's nothing controversial, here. It's not an online arena for acrid rhetoric or partisan debate over the perceived messages or presumed bias behind television.

No smoking guns. No hidden agenda.

That said , this is also not an austere, clinical museum of broadcast history.

Just consider this the digital and dynamic equivalent of a curio shop at the beach. A place in which you leisurely browse to enjoy the salient and silly moments displayed over the last six decades on your home TV screen.

No pressure. Nothing to buy, because we have nothing to sell.

Post your reactions to the clips we display and share your television memories.

We will also , occasionally, include vintage radio and film content, if it's fun.

This will be,largely, family friendly content. You have a voice in this site, but, please keep it clean and on point.

So, enjoy the video, as it flails through the fiberoptics :)

Yours in TV,
PAGEONE
